Freshman Vocab - Etymology

Latin Roots

Week 1    -ject, to throw

1. Eject                    to throw out of, like a tape player, or from a game

2. Inject                   something, like a needle

3. Reject                  to fail to accept, throw back

4. Projectile             something being thrown, path taken by something being thrown

 others - object, subject, objective, subjective, trajectory

Week 2    Pre- before

1. Predict                 tell what one thinks will happen in the future

2. Prevent                keep something from happening

3. Prenatal               before birth, or during pregnancy

4. Prelude                a part that comes before something else, prelude to piece of music

5. Prequel                book or movies set before something that has already been written (Star Wars)

6. Preamble             introductory statement before important statement

7. preempt               to take over something, someone's land, TV show

8. preface                 introductory remarks

1. Exit                      v. to leave                n. a way out

2. Exhast                 to use up entirely, supply of oil; the escape of gas or vapor

Week 19 Therm - heat

1. Thermometer       thing to measure temperature

2. Thermal               having to do with heat or conserving heat

3. thermostat            machine that keeps something the same temp.

4. geothermal           heat coming from the earth

5. hypothermia        when the body's temperature goes below normal

6. hyperthermia       body gets too hot

7. Thermos              container designed to keep heat in or out, keep

food desired temp.
